Songs like Hawa je saath saath, Anari hai koi, khiladi hai koi, Koi ladki mujhe kal raat sapne mein mili, are outstanding. RD Burman’s music is youthful and a joy to hear even after 30 years. However, the party cannot last for long and the true identities of the sisters is revealed and the climax is quite interesting And for some time, justice seems to have prevailed. She even gives back her whip wielding “Chu Chu” the reverse treatment. Geeta in her new home, teaches her tormentors a lesson and takes control of the household. Raaka, who is now with Seeta, finds a new feeling for his erstwhile partner and very soon two new romances are budding. He finds himself falling in love with Geeta. Geeta runs into Dr Ravi, who is amazed at the transformation. In the ensuing melee (which has an excellent comic sequence), Seeta and Geeta swap places. The police officer mistakes Geeta for Seeta and immediately notifies Seeta’s uncle and aunt, who come in to pick her up. Coincidentally, the same day, Geeta catches hold of some roadside gamblers and takes them to the police station. Seeta’s aunt and uncle report the matter to the police along with her photograph. One day, Seeta, fed up of her existence, decides to end her life by jumping into the river, only to be saved by Raaka. The other twin Geeta (Hema 2), meanwhile, has grown up to be a roadside acrobat partnering Raaka ( Dharmendra), an innocent boozing orphan, with whom she keeps having a lot of fights and arguments. Her helpless invalid grandmother can do nothing to save her. Kaushalya’s brother Rakesh (Roopesh Kumar) keeps Seeta in control with his whip. She is handed over a tray of teacups which she nervously carries to the guests and Kaushalya’s daughter Sheela (Daisy Irani) trips Seeta, which makes the guests leave in a huff. One such proposal is from Dr.Ravi ( Sanjeev Kumar) and Seeta is made to dress up in short dress with a thick layer of makeup and a tattoo on her face.
So, Kaushalya successfully scuttles all marriage proposals which Seeta gets. Very soon, Seeta (Hema 1), who goes along with her real parents, becomes an orphan and is brought up by her Chacha Badrinath (Satyen Kappu),and Chachi Kaushalya ( Manorama in an outstanding performance) who have their eyes on the inheritance which Seeta can get only on her marriage. And the twins, Seeta and Geeta, are separated at birth, without any knowledge of each other’s existence. The gypsy is tempted to keep one of the babies for herself. They are given shelter by a childless gypsy couple. And it gave rise to many similar remakes, notable among them being Sridevi’s Chaalbaaz.Ī millionaire couple traveling through a jungle, the lady starts her labor pains. And it catapulted Hema Malini to the top, a position which she held on to steadfastly for nearly a decade! Although the basic plot was a remake of the Dilip Kumar starrer Ram aur Shyam, Seeta aur Geeta was much more entertaining.
With a script written by Salim-Javed, direction by Ramesh Sippy, music by R.D.Burman, and a top-rung star cast, the movie had all the ingredients in to be successful.
This film, released in 1972, went on to become a cult classic.
